The latest animated sequel from Disney, Zootopia 2, has stormed the global box office, setting new benchmarks especially in China, where it opened to a staggering US $272 million in its first five days.
Worldwide, the film has generated around US $556 million in its opening weekend — making it the biggest global debut ever for an animated film and ranking it among the top four global openings in cinema history.
In China, Zootopia 2 has rewritten the record books: it became the highest-grossing foreign animated film in Chinese box office history, and posted the strongest single-day gross for any imported film, surpassing even previous global hits like Avengers: Endgame.
Analysts say the film’s success underlines the enduring global appeal of the original movie’s themes such as ambition, unity and social harmony combined with strong nostalgia and savvy marketing. The Chinese market in particular seems to have embraced the sequel, aided by prior popularity of the franchise and even a dedicated theme-park land that helped build long-term fan-affection.
Given this explosive start, Zootopia 2 is now on a clear path to join the “billion-dollar club,” with many forecasting a final global box-office haul well beyond US$1 billion.
