The court Ernakulam District and Principal Sessions Court found that the prosecution failed to prove that Dileep conspired in the 2017 abduction and sexual assault of a prominent actress.
However, the court convicted six other accused in the case including the prime accused Pulsar Suni under charges of gang rape, criminal conspiracy, abduction, wrongful confinement, attempt to disrobe, and related offences.
On 17 February 2017, perpetrators allegedly kidnapped a female actor while she traveled to a film shoot and sexually assaulted her inside a moving vehicle for nearly two hours. They reportedly recorded the crime on video. Authorities accused Dileep of orchestrating the crime allegedly hiring the perpetrators, conspiring to plan the abduction and assault, and helping tamper with evidence, including digital media.
Over the course of the protracted trial, approximately 261 witnesses testified; the prosecution submitted hundreds of documents and audio-visual data; but many key testimonies reportedly turned hostile (i.e. retracted or contradicted).
The case had triggered major debate on abuse, harassment, and power dynamics in the Malayalam film industry.
