After years of political deadlock over the celebration of Tipu Jayanti, Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar has submitted a notice to the Speaker calling for a revival of state-sponsored observances of Tipu Jayanti.
Celebrations of Tipu Jayanti were first instituted by the then-Congress government but abolished by the succeeding government in 2019 under Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Kashappanavar’s call to reinstate the festival has reignited fault lines: supporters view Tipu Sultan as a historical hero deserving commemoration, while critics argue that reviving the celebrations would inflame communal divisions.
The assembly debates the motion, and tensions rise as political parties adopt hardline public stands. Lawmakers exchange sharp arguments, each side determined to defend its position before the nation. The atmosphere grows increasingly charged, with party leaders rallying their members and the public watching closely.. BJP has already threatened protests should the government attempt to bring back the official celebration.
