Fresh tensions have erupted along the Thailand–Cambodia border, raising concerns about regional stability just days after a US-brokered ceasefire was announced to ease hostilities between the two neighbours.
Renewed Clashes Reported Near Disputed Areas
According to officials from both sides, sporadic exchanges and heightened military alertness were reported near disputed border zones. While there has been no confirmation of large-scale escalation, the renewed activity has undermined hopes that the ceasefire would hold.
Local authorities said residents in nearby villages were advised to remain cautious as security forces increased patrols.
Ceasefire Under Strain
The ceasefire, facilitated with diplomatic support from the United States, was intended to reduce tensions following weeks of strain over territorial disagreements. However, the latest developments suggest that ground-level challenges and unresolved issues continue to test the agreement.
Neither country has formally withdrawn from the ceasefire, but both have accused the other of violations.
US officials said they are in contact with both Bangkok and Phnom Penh, urging restraint and dialogue. Regional bodies have also called on the two nations to respect existing agreements and avoid actions that could escalate the situation.
History of Border Disputes
Thailand and Cambodia have a long history of border disagreements, particularly around areas near ancient temple sites. While most disputes have been managed through diplomacy, occasional flare-ups have led to military stand-offs.
