Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan strongly defended the VBG Ramji Bill in Parliament amid sharp protests from the Congress, which objected to the alleged removal of Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the legislation. The issue triggered heated political debate and led to disruptions in both Houses.
Minister Clarifies Government’s Stand
While responding to the opposition’s allegations, Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the government had no intention of disrespecting Mahatma Gandhi. Instead, he argued that the bill focuses on administrative and developmental objectives rather than symbolic naming.
Moreover, Chouhan accused the Congress of spreading misinformation. He stated that the opposition was trying to create controversy where none existed. According to him, the bill remains aligned with constitutional values and national interests.
Congress Intensifies Protest
Despite the clarification, Congress leaders continued their protest inside Parliament. They claimed that removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name undermines his legacy and disrespects the values he stood for.
As a result, opposition MPs raised slogans and demanded either a rollback of the bill or a clear amendment restoring Gandhi’s name. The protest eventually forced temporary adjournments, highlighting the intensity of the disagreement.
Political Tensions Escalate in Parliament
Meanwhile, the ruling party maintained that the opposition was politicizing the issue ahead of upcoming electoral battles. BJP leaders argued that Congress was ignoring the substance of the bill and focusing solely on emotional narratives.
At the same time, parliamentary proceedings remained tense as both sides refused to back down. However, senior leaders urged restraint and called for constructive debate.
