Russian Drone and Missile Barrage Kills at Least 25 in Western Ukraine

A massive overnight drone and missile attack by Russian forces struck western Ukraine, killing at least 25 people, including children, and leaving dozens injured as fires engulfed residential buildings. The city of Ternopil bore the brunt of the onslaught, as two apartment blocks took direct hits, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Scale and Method of the Attack

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched 476 drones and 48 missiles, marking one of its most concentrated aerial salvos in weeks. Many of the drones were intercepted, but several still struck civilian areas, overwhelming Ukrainian air defenses.

Emergency services described the scene in Ternopil as apocalyptic. Smoke and flames rose rapidly, and rescuers rushed in to search for survivors amid the rubble.

Among the 25 confirmed dead were three children, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said, raising fears that the toll could rise further as rescue teams continue digging through debris. In addition to the fatalities, around 73 people suffered injuries, including young children.

Strategic Implications and International Impact

This strike comes at a particularly sensitive moment. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was in Turkey at the time to discuss possible peace talks, and he sharply condemned the attack, calling on Western allies to provide stronger air defense support.

Western powers, alarmed by the scale of the attack and the targeting of civilian infrastructure, may face increased pressure to escalate military and humanitarian support to Ukraine. The attack also underscores the escalating role of drones in Russia’s strategic playbook, signaling that Moscow may rely more heavily on unmanned systems to bypass traditional air defenses.
