Poland imposed temporary airport closures on Tuesday after Russia launched hundreds of drones across Ukraine, triggering widespread air-defense alerts. The move underscores rising regional tensions as the conflict spills closer to NATO borders.
Russian Drone Swarm Triggers Regional Security Fears
Poland’s air traffic authority confirmed that multiple airports, including Warsaw Chopin and several regional hubs, suspended operations after military radar detected “high-risk aerial activity.” Although no drones entered Polish airspace, authorities said the flight paths were close enough to require precautionary shutdowns.
Officials also stressed that the closures were brief but necessary to avoid any mid-air risks. Flights were diverted, delayed, or temporarily grounded until the threat subsided.
Ukraine Faces One of the Largest Drone Attacks Yet
Ukraine reported one of the biggest drone assaults in months, with Russian forces launching wave after wave of Shahed-type drones overnight. Cities including Kyiv, Lviv, and Odesa came under attack, forcing air-defense units to work continuously.
Ukrainian authorities said the drone waves aimed to overwhelm their defenses. Damage assessments are still underway, but several regions reported power disruptions and infrastructure hits.
