PM Modi Begins Three-Day Johannesburg Visit for G20 Summit and IBSA Meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a three-day trip to Johannesburg, South Africa, to attend the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit, which runs from November 21 to 23, 2025. This year’s gathering holds particular importance: it is the first G20 Summit hosted in Africa, underlining the growing influence of Global South economies.

Modi Frames Visit Around “One Earth, One Family, One Future” Vision

On his departure, Modi invoked India’s philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam the world is one family” and emphasized his global outlook with the slogan “One Earth, One Family, One Future.” He said he would present India’s priorities on issues ranging from debt relief and sustainable development to climate change and energy transition.

Key Themes Growth, Debt, Climate, and AI

To begin with, the first session will focus on inclusive and sustainable economic growth, particularly emphasizing trade, development financing, and global debt. Following that, the second session, titled A Resilient World, will tackle disaster risk, climate change, just energy transitions, and food systems. Finally, in the concluding session, A Fair and Just Future for All, the discussions will turn to critical minerals, decent work, and the fast-evolving challenges of artificial intelligence

IBSA Leaders’ Meeting on the Sidelines

Alongside the G20, Modi will also attend the 6th IBSA Summit a trilateral meeting with Brazil and South Africa. The IBSA forum offers a strategic platform for the Global South, aligning with India’s longstanding push for stronger cooperation among emerging economies.

Modi describes this summit as “particularly special,” not only because of its location, but also due to its Global South focus and theme of “Solidarity, Equality & Sustainability.” He and India expect to play a central role in shaping an agenda that reflects the concerns of emerging economies, especially those on the African continent.
