The Philippines has accused the Chinese Coast Guard of damaging Filipino fishing vessels during an incident in the South China Sea, escalating tensions in the disputed waters and renewing concerns over maritime safety in the region.
Manila Raises Alarm Over Incident
Philippine authorities said the incident involved Chinese coast guard ships operating near areas traditionally used by Filipino fishermen. According to official statements, the manoeuvres allegedly led to damage to fishing boats, though no injuries were reported.
The government said it is verifying details and gathering evidence from affected fishermen.
Manila confirmed it has raised the issue through diplomatic channels, reiterating its opposition to what it described as aggressive actions in its maritime zones. Officials stressed that Filipino fishermen were conducting routine activities at the time of the incident.
The Philippines called for restraint and adherence to international maritime law.
China Yet to Respond Fully
Chinese authorities have not issued a detailed response to the specific allegations. In past disputes, Beijing has maintained that its coast guard operates lawfully in what it claims as its territorial waters.
The South China Sea remains one of the world’s most contested regions, with overlapping claims by several Southeast Asian nations. Incidents involving fishing vessels and coast guard ships have been a recurring source of diplomatic friction.
