New York City’s incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, held a first-of-its-kind meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House, where the two struck a surprisingly cooperative tone on pressing city issues like housing, the affordability crisis, and crime.
Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, said he appreciated the meeting, calling it very productive and emphasizing that both leaders share a deep love for New York City. He said the conversation centered on economic security and highlighted the cost pressures facing everyday New Yorkers. He explained, “We spoke about rent, groceries, utilities … the different ways in which rising expenses are pushing people out.”

Trump echoed that sentiment, saying the two “agree on a lot more than I would have thought.” He praised Mamdani’s priorities to build more housing and lower living costs and expressed a genuine desire to support him: “I expect to be helping him, not hurting him.”
While acknowledging ideological divides, Mamdani made it clear that his goal was practical: working across the aisle to make essential reforms for New Yorkers.
