Mumbai Ranks At 39 In International Traffic Speed Index by the TomTom Traffic Index 2024, which analyzed traffic congestion in 500 cities across 62 countries. This ranking shows a significant increase in traffic delays. The average time to travel 10 kilometers during peak hours rose to 29.26 minutes in 2024 from 21.20 minutes in 2023.

Nationally, Mumbai is the sixth slowest among Indian cities, trailing Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Pune. Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Pune are also among the top five most congested cities globally, with Kolkata leading in India.

Historically, Mumbai’s congestion levels have been among the worst worldwide. In 2021, it ranked fifth globally, while in 2020, it was second only to Moscow. During 2018 and 2019, Mumbai held the top spot as the most congested city worldwide. Despite infrastructure projects like the Coastal Road and Metro expansions, traffic conditions have worsened due to high population density, limited road space, and a growing number of vehicles. Mumbai now averages 500 cars per kilometer.

Experts suggest measures such as congestion taxes, odd-even vehicle rules, and improvements to public transport to address these issues. Expanding the Metro network and deploying green buses and taxis could also reduce congestion and pollution. Compared to cities like Tokyo and Singapore with effective traffic management systems, Mumbai faces significant challenges requiring urgent and sustainable solutions.
