Morocco is positioning itself as a key player in Africa’s food security strategy by leveraging its position as the world’s leading phosphate exporter and its rapid expansion in renewable energy.
With roughly 70% of global phosphate reserves, Morocco supplies critical raw material for fertilizers, which are essential for boosting agricultural productivity across the continent. The OCP Group has expanded production capacity and invested heavily in fertilizer manufacturing, including new plants in Nigeria, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Ghana, aimed at reducing Africa’s dependence on imported fertilizers.
Simultaneously, Morocco is aggressively scaling up renewable energy targeting 52% of installed capacity by 2030—with massive solar and wind projects This clean energy push supports energy-intensive phosphate processing while also enabling green hydrogen production, which could power future fertilizer production using ammonia synthesis
This vision is part of Morocco’s broader “Green Generation 2020–2030” agricultural plan and its role in South-South cooperation, with several African leaders praising OCP’s investments as a model for continental self-reliance in food production.
