MEA Defends Salman Khan's 'Battle of Galwan': Pranay Upadhyay on India's Creative Freedom

MEA Defends Salman Khan’s ‘Battle of Galwan’: Pranay Upadhyay on India’s Creative Freedom

India’s Ministry of External Affairs firmly defends artistic freedom amid China’s criticism of Salman Khan’s upcoming film Battle of Galwan. Correspondent Pranay Upadhyay reports on this diplomatic stance in an India Today segment aired on December 30, 2025. Moreover, government sources emphasize that cinematic expression forms an integral part of India’s democratic values.

The Film at the Center of MEA Controversy

Battle of Galwan, directed by Apoorva Lakhia and starring Salman Khan as Colonel Bikkumalla Santosh Babu, draws inspiration from the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. The teaser, released on Salman’s 60th birthday (December 27, 2025), showcases intense hand-to-hand combat and patriotic fervor. The film schedules for theatrical release on April 17, 2026.

China’s Criticism and India’s Response

Chinese state media, particularly the Global Times, accuses the film of “distorting facts” and exaggerating events to stoke anti-China sentiment. It falsely claims the Galwan Valley lies on the Chinese side of the LAC and blames India for provoking the clash.

In response, MEA sources state: “India is a country with freedom of expression, and cinematic expression is an integral part of it.” They add that filmmakers exercise full artistic freedom, mea with no government involvement in the project. Concerns can direct to the Ministry of Defence for clarification.
