Veteran actress Judi Dench, aged 90, has opened up about a severe decline in her vision admitting that she can no longer recognise even familiar faces, including close friends and colleagues.
During a recent interview broadcast by a major news outlet, Dench explained, “You don’t see me on camera anymore because I can’t see,” referring to her worsening vision. She added with poignant frankness that while she might recognise someone’s outline or silhouette, she “can’t recognise anybody anymore.”
Beyond recognition, the vision loss has affected daily activities she once took for granted. She said she can no longer watch television or read two things that for many are part of everyday life. Judi Dench also revealed that she now usually needs a companion when she goes out, because navigating on her own has become unsafe.
Her candid confession shines a light on the progressive and deeply personal impact of AMD particularly how degenerative eye diseases can strip away not only vision but also aspects of independence and intimacy like recognising loved ones. Despite these challenges, Dench’s openness renews public awareness about vision health, especially among older adults.
