Japan Reaffirms Its Stance on Western Sahara at TICAD 9

Japan Reaffirms Its Stance on Western Sahara at TICAD 9

Japan has once again reaffirmed its long-standing position of not recognizing the Polisario Front. During the preparatory meeting of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development , a Polisario representative attempted to join the sessions. The move caused tension in the conference hall, but Japan acted quickly to block the attempt.

Unauthorized attempt to infiltrate the conference

The incident unfolded when individuals linked to the Polisario Front used false credentials to enter the meeting. They reportedly placed a nameplate labeled “Sahrawi Republic” at the conference table, attempting to create the impression of official representation.

However, Japanese organizers immediately intervened. Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Yoichi Fukazawa addressed the participants, stressing that the presence of the separatist entity was unauthorized and had no validity. He reminded delegates that only UN-recognized states are legitimate participants in TICAD.

This clear and quick response prevented confusion and ensured that Japan’s official stance remained respected.

Japan’s consistent position on Western Sahara

Japan has a long history of rejecting the Polisario’s participation in international forums. In 2022, during TICAD 8 in Tunis, the Polisario tried to join the summit. At that time, Japan made the same clarification: it does not recognize the self-proclaimed “Sahrawi Republic” and does not extend invitations to it.

By repeating its position at TICAD 9, Japan has shown consistency in its foreign policy. This approach reinforces its credibility as a country that respects UN standards and avoids taking sides in disputes outside of international consensus. It also demonstrates Japan’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty claims over Western Sahara, aligning with many other nations that recognize Morocco’s territorial integrity.

Reactions to the incident and diplomatic impact

Political observers believe the infiltration attempt was a coordinated move supported by Algeria, which backs the Polisario Front. Analyst Mustapha Tossa noted that this tactic reflects how far Algeria is willing to go in order to challenge Morocco’s claim over Western Sahara.

However, the firm rejection by Japan may influence other African countries to reconsider allowing the Polisario into their official gatherings. It also strengthens Morocco’s diplomatic position by showing that one of the world’s largest economies and a respected international actor refuses to legitimize the separatist movement.

Algeria and the Polisario, the failed maneuver highlights the difficulty of gaining recognition outside their traditional allies. The incident instead ended up reinforcing Japan’s neutrality and respect for international law.
