Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy seized a foreign oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on December 26, 2025. Authorities accused the vessel of carrying smuggled fuel, escalating tensions in this vital global shipping lane.
Details of the Hormuz Seizure
The tanker carried approximately 4 million liters (about 25,000 barrels) of smuggled fuel when IRGC forces intercepted it. A provincial justice official, Mojtaba Ghahramani, confirmed the operation via state media outlet IRNA.
Authorities detained 16 foreign crew members, but officials withheld the tanker’s flag and crew nationalities. IRGC forces boarded the vessel as it attempted to exit Iranian waters.
Iran has a pattern of detaining vessels in the region, including the UK-flagged Stena Impero in 2019. Tehran often links these actions to sanctions or maritime disputes.
No immediate international response emerged to this latest seizure, but it underscores ongoing risks in the waterway.
