On 28 November 2025, Ionuț Moșteanu stepped down from his post as Defence Minister of Romania following revelations that he had misrepresented his academic credentials.
CV inconsistencies spark political uproar
He departs just five months into his tenure, disrupting continuity at a sensitive time as Romania navigates security challenges amid regional instability.
In response, Moșteanu published a different diploma on social media, stating he had Ionuț only earned a bachelor’s degree from another institution, Bioterra University, in 2015 and apologized for the “mistake.”
Critics from opposition parties called for his resignation, accusing him of dishonesty and asserting that such misrepresentation undermines trust in public office.
Minister resigns amid national security concerns
Moșteanu announced his resignation citing concerns that the ongoing debate about his educational background could distract from Romania’s defence mission especially given ongoing regional tensions related to the war in Ukraine.
