India and Nepal share one of the closest relationships in South Asia, shaped by history, culture, geography, and trade. Yet, both countries know that there is still room to make their economic ties stronger. Recently, Rakesh Pandey, the new Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, called on both nations to work more closely together. His remarks came during a discussion organized by the Nepal-India Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Regular Sector-Wise Meetings for Stronger Cooperation
One of Pandey’s main suggestions was to hold monthly meetings focused on specific economic sectors. For example, one month could focus on energy, another on digital trade, and another on tourism. These regular meetings would allow business leaders, policymakers, and investors from both sides to share their ideas, talk about problems, and find common solutions.
Instead of waiting for large annual events, frequent smaller discussions can make progress faster and smoother. This approach would help both governments respond quickly to challenges faced by businesses and reduce the long delays that often slow down investment.
Boosting Connectivity: Roads, Trade, and Digital Links
A major theme of Pandey’s remarks was connectivity. He stressed that both physical infrastructure and digital platforms are equally important in today’s world.
On the physical side, better highways, smoother customs procedures, and modernized border facilities can make the movement of goods and services easier. This would lower costs for traders and increase competitiveness. On the digital side, faster internet links and cross-border payment systems like UPI can make financial transactions quick, secure, and cheaper.
If a Nepali business owner can receive payments directly from Indian clients through UPI, trade would become much more convenient. Similarly, if transport and logistics between the two countries improve, Nepal’s exports can reach Indian markets more quickly and efficiently.
Building on Shared History and Culture
India and Nepal are more than just neighbors; they share deep cultural, social, and historical bonds. Families on both sides of the border are often linked by marriage, traditions, and festivals. Pandey’s call for stronger cooperation highlights how this closeness can move beyond culture and turn into real economic progress.
The road ahead may not be without challenges. Issues like trade imbalances, border sensitivities, and political differences have sometimes slowed progress in the past. However, with structured dialogue, regular meetings, and trust-building measures, India and Nepal can overcome these barriers.
Nepal Can Benefit from India’s Growth
Sunil KC, the president of NICCI, welcomed Pandey’s vision. He pointed out that India’s economy is expanding at a fast pace, and Nepal has a unique chance to connect itself to this growth.
India is investing heavily in industries like technology, finance, and clean energy. By strengthening ties, Nepal can benefit through more exports, foreign investment, and knowledge transfer. This would not only grow Nepal’s economy but also create jobs and opportunities for young people, many of whom currently migrate abroad in search of work.
