Imran Masood slams Mamata Banerjee over ‘Babri mosque’ row in Bengal says it stirs communal division

In a sharp rebuke issued on 9 December 2025, imran Masood accused the ruling party in West Bengal of enabling communal polarisation through the mosque-construction controversy imran sparked by a suspended MLA. Masood said that granting permission or even tacit support for building a “Babri-style mosque” in Murshidabad is tantamount to giving “space to communal forces.”

Masood described the recent foundation-stone laying by ex-MLA as a “drama” aimed at dividing communities ahead of elections. He warned that such moves are dangerous for social harmony and will likely backfire politically.

Masood urged leaders and the state government to avoid actions that inflame communal tensions under the guise of religious rights.

With calls growing louder from various quarters including from him for authorities to check such provocative steps, the controversy over the proposed mosque and the role of political parties has taken a sharp and polarised turn. Observers warn this could escalate communal divisions just before the next round of elections in West Bengal.
