Hong Kong Delays Jimmy Lai’s Trial Over Serious Heart Concerns

Hong Kong Delays Jimmy Lai’s Trial Over Serious Heart Concerns

The court in Hong Kong postponed the closing submissions of Jimmy Lai’s national security trial on Friday after his lawyer reported that the 77-year-old pro-democracy media figure experienced troubling heart palpitations. The judge agreed that Lai must receive the heart medication and monitoring equipment recommended by a medical specialist before the trial can continue. The next hearing has been set for Monday to allow time for these arrangements.

Trial Wrapped in Years, Isolation, and Rising Health Concerns

Since his arrest in August 2020, Lai has spent more than 1,700 days mostly in solitary confinement. His trial, which began in December 2023, has grown into a prolonged legal process, far exceeding its initial timeline.

He faces serious charges two counts of collusion with foreign forces and one count of publishing seditious material all of which he denies. The delay due to health reasons underscores the physical and emotional strain he has endured.

Why the Court Paused: Medical Needs Come First

Lai’s defense lawyer, Robert Pang, explained to the court that his client felt faint and suffered palpitations and dizziness. A medical specialist noted Lai’s need for immediate care, including a heart monitor. The judge, Esther Toh, stressed that his well-being must come before legal proceedings, saying, “The only concern is the heart.” Prosecutors confirmed that medical staff were ready and the necessary supplies would be in place by Monday.

Lai’s trial has captured global attention. Western governments, human rights organizations, and media watchdogs have framed his case as a test for judicial independence and press freedom in Hong Kong. The U.S., among others, has called for his release, calling the trial politically motivated. Former President Donald Trump said he’d “do everything I can” to support Lai even though he later walked back his exact wording. Diplomats from at least seven countries have attended court proceedings, highlighting international concern

Supporters Fear for Lai’s Life Amid Wars on Words

Among Lai’s supporters, anxiety is high. His son, Sebastien, has voiced real fear that his father might die while still detained. Advocacy groups like Reporters Without Borders have long warned that his continued detention in isolation is seriously impacting his health. Meanwhile, the Hong Kong government maintains that Lai is receiving fair treatment and called international criticism slanderous.

The trial does not resume until at least Monday, giving time for Lai to receive proper care. Once proceedings restart, closing arguments are expected to run for eight days. After that, judges will take several months to deliver their verdict. The entire case could stretch well into late 2025 or 2026 meaning Lai could remain behind bars for years before knowing his fate.
