German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has reaffirmed his firm stance on defending Israel’s security and political interests in the European Union, calling himself the clearest defender of Israel in Brussels. His remarks come at a time when tensions in the Middle East are once again shaping EU foreign policy debates, especially concerning humanitarian aid, defense cooperation, and regional stability.
Germany’s unwavering diplomatic support for Israel within the European Union
During his visit to Brussels, Wadephul emphasized that Germany will continue to back Israel in all major EU forums. He stated that while Europe must support peace and humanitarian initiatives in the region, it must also stand firm with Israel against any form of terrorism or delegitimization.

The minister highlighted that Germany’s position is not only a matter of historical responsibility but also one of maintaining international order and shared democratic values.
Balancing humanitarian aid with Israel’s right to security
Gaza and the West Bank, the EU has faced increasing calls to review its aid policies toward the region. Wadephul said Germany would continue to advocate for humanitarian relief while ensuring that such support does not benefit extremist groups.
Wadephul’s comments reflect Berlin’s growing influence over EU foreign affairs. As several European states remain divided on how to handle Israel-Palestine relations, Germany has taken the lead in pushing for stronger defense and intelligence cooperation with Israel. The foreign minister also mentioned that Germany is committed to ensuring that European financial mechanisms, including trade partnerships and research cooperation, remain aligned with Israel’s democratic and security standards.
Calls for unity among EU members amid Middle East tensions
The German minister urged EU partners to avoid what he called moral ambiguity regarding the Middle East. He argued that Europe’s credibility depends on standing clearly against terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah. “Neutrality in the face of terror is not an option, Wadephul said, stressing that moral clarity must guide the EU’s approach in supporting both regional peace and Israel’s sovereignty.
Wadephul also outlined Germany’s ongoing diplomatic outreach in the region. Berlin has supported joint peace initiatives through the United Nations and continues to fund reconstruction projects that foster stability.
