Gabol visits OICCI, outlines Sindh’s strategy to foster trade

Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Gabol visited the Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Karachi, where he presented the government’s vision for improving the province’s investment climate. The OICCI represents more than 200 multinational companies from over 30 countries, making it one of the most influential business chambers in Pakistan. These companies contribute significantly to Pakistan’s tax revenues, trade, and employment.

Sindh Government’s Plan for Economic Growth and Investment

Speaking to OICCI members, Gabol emphasized that Sindh has great potential for growth in trade, energy, agriculture, and technology. Karachi, the country’s financial hub, is home to Pakistan’s largest port, stock exchange, and banking sector. With proper reforms and better coordination, the province could attract both regional and international investment.

Gabol explained that the provincial government is focusing on cutting red tape, reducing unnecessary delays in approvals, and providing faster services to investors. He said the government wants to create a friendly environment where businesses can grow without facing excessive bureaucratic hurdles.

He also stressed that the government’s strategy includes improving basic infrastructure such as roads, industrial zones, and energy supply, which are necessary for industries to perform efficiently.

Security Improvements as a Key to Trade and Investment

One of the central themes of Gabol’s discussion was security. Investors have long raised concerns about safety in Karachi, which has faced challenges related to street crime, extortion, and political violence in the past.

Gabol reassured OICCI members that law enforcement agencies, including police and Rangers, are being strengthened with new technology, better training, and more coordination. He promised strict action against criminal networks that harm the business environment. A secure environment, he explained, is essential for attracting long-term investment and ensuring that international companies feel confident in expanding operations in Sindh.

Public-Private Partnerships for Development

Gabol called for closer cooperation between the government and the private sector, saying that neither can achieve sustainable economic growth alone. He highlighted that many successful projects in Sindh, such as energy and infrastructure developments, were possible due to public-private partnerships.

He encouraged multinational companies to expand their operations in Sindh, especially in sectors like renewable energy, technology, manufacturing, and agriculture processing. By working together, he said, the government and private investors can create more jobs for young people and strengthen Sindh’s role as an economic engine for Pakistan.

OICCI’s Role in Pakistan’s Economy

The OICCI has played a critical role in Pakistan’s business and economic development for over 150 years. Its member companies are among the largest taxpayers in the country, contributing around one-third of Pakistan’s total tax revenue. They also bring in advanced technologies, international best practices, and significant foreign direct investment.

By reaching out to OICCI, the Sindh government aims to reassure these companies that their concerns are being heard and that efforts are being made to address challenges. Business experts believe this engagement is important at a time when Pakistan is struggling with low investor confidence and a weakening economy.
