As the 2025–26 Winter Session of Parliament approaches, tensions are mounting. Opposition parties are gearing up to use the session to highlight their grievances related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls a high-stakes issue after the just-concluded state elections in Bihar.
Opposition leaders argue that the SIR process — which involved door-to-door verification and deletion of large numbers from the voter lists disproportionately affected marginalised communities and may have skewed electoral outcomes in favour of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
During an all-party meeting ahead of the session, lawmakers already set the tone: the opposition plans to demand a full parliamentary debate on SIR and related electoral irregularities. Other flashpoints expected to dominate the agenda include scrutiny of the recent Delhi blast, funding allocations to states such as Tamil Nadu, and high-profile legal cases.
On the government side, a ministerial voice has urged calm and cooperation, stressing that this marks the ninth SIR since independence and asserting that electoral rolls require periodic updating — framing SIR as a routine safeguard rather than controversy.
With passions high and stakes greater than ever, this Winter Session could turn into one of the most contentious in recent years and its outcome may reshape voter-confidence, the upcoming election cycle, and trust in electoral institutions.
