Ethiopia Nationwide Dialogue ECSOC Calls It a Critical Opportunity for National Consensus

The Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations Council urges all citizens to actively participate in the ongoing National Dialogue process. Leaders describe it as a “rare and decisive opportunity” to forge shared national consensus and establish foundations for lasting democracy in Ethiopia.

ECSOC’s Strong Endorsement

ECSOC President Ahmed Hussein emphasizes the dialogue’s urgency in a December 28, 2025, statement. He notes that decades of political disagreements, historical polarization, and ideological conflicts have deeply divided the nation. Ethiopia has “paid dearly” for lacking consensus on fundamental issues, he adds.

Hussein stresses that differences strengthen national unity when addressed through dialogue rather than confrontation. ECSOC actively supports the pre-conference phase to ensure the process remains participatory, inclusive, and credible.

Inclusive Efforts Highlight Women’s Role

Civil society actors focus on marginalized groups. Worknesh Begi, founder of Turcanfi Sustainable Development, highlights efforts to gather women’s views and submit agenda proposals. These initiatives aim to build consensus and ensure meaningful female participation.

Broader Context of the National Dialogue

The government launched this nationwide initiative to heal divisions, foster reconciliation, and address root causes of conflict. The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission finalizes agenda items and prepares for the main conference.

ECSOC, the apex body representing over 5,300 civil society organizations, positions itself as a key facilitator for inclusive input.

This call underscores growing momentum for dialogue as Ethiopia navigates political and social challenges toward unity and democratic progress.
