Death Sentence for Hasina in Absentia Sparks International Outcry and Extradition Demand

Death Sentence for Hasina in Absentia Sparks International Outcry and Extradition Demand

Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death in absentia, igniting fierce political reactions both domestically and abroad. The tribunal concluded that Hasina played a central role in the brutal crackdown on student protests in July August 2024, a violent chapter in Bangladesh’s history that left over 1,400 people dead.

Charges and Prosecutors’ Case

Prosecutors accused Hasina of orchestrating mass killings, ordering lethal force via helicopters, drones, and ground weapons, and failing to prevent violence against students and civilians. Muhammad Tajul Islam, the chief prosecutor, called her the “mastermind and principal architect” behind the atrocities. In a powerful closing argument, he stated that while she should have faced 1,400 death sentences one for each life lost he would settle for at least one capital punishment.

Political Fallout and Calls for Extradition

Immediately after the verdict, Dhaka’s interim government demanded Hasina’s return from India, where she remains in exile. Some political leaders in Bangladesh have argued that the ruling also affects Bangladesh–India relations, pressing New Delhi to respect the existing extradition treaty. According to them, granting her refuge challenges their notion of justice.

Interim Government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus defended the ruling, calling it “limited, though important” justice, but stopping short of declaring it a full resolution of the tragedy.

Hasina’s Response and Questions Around Due Process

Hasina, 78, has rejected the tribunal’s legitimacy, branding the verdict “biased and politically motivated.” Her supporters argue that the trial has been influenced by her political opponents and lacks fair procedural standards.

Critics, too, have raised red flags about the nature of in-absentia trials and their broader political impact. Some analysts suggest the sentence could inflame divisions and provoke destabilising protests, especially given her base of vocal Awami League supporters.
