Could Kim Jong-un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, become the next leader of North Korea?

Could Kim Jong un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, become the next leader of North Korea?

North Korea’s leadership has followed patrilineal hereditary succession through the Kim family since 1948, with power passing from Kim Il-sung to Kim Jong-il and then to Kim Jong-un. While Kim Yo Jong born around 1987-1989 remains one of the most powerful figures in the regime serving as a key propagandist, diplomat, and de facto chief of staff to her brother recent developments point to un grooming his young daughter, Kim Ju-ae believed to be about 12-13 years old, as the probable long-term successor.

Kim Yo Jong’s Role and Past Speculation

Kim Yo Jong has been a prominent figure since the early 2010s, often issuing statements on foreign policy and accompanying her brother on high-profile trips. Analysts once viewed her as a strong contender, especially during health rumors about Kim Jong-un in 2020. In a sudden incapacitation scenario, experts suggest she could act as a regent or transitional leader due to her influence and trust within the elite. However, her public profile has been somewhat overshadowed in 2025.

Shift Toward Kim Ju-ae

Since her debut in late 2022, Kim Ju-ae has appeared frequently at military events, parades, and even international visits (including to China in 2025). South Korean intelligence and analysts interpret this as deliberate grooming for succession. State media refers to her with honorifics like “respected” or “beloved” child, and her visibility especially in military settings signals preparation for leadership. This would continue the direct bloodline father to daughter while bypassing Yo Jong.
