Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot has openly criticized the European Union’s fractured stance on the Gaza war, warning that the bloc’s credibility is collapsing. He pointed to the EU’s failure to agree on sanctions against Israel for its ongoing military actions in Gaza and the expansion of settlements in the West Bank. Belgium argues that this lack of unity undermines the EU’s global authority and weakens its influence in international diplomacy.
Public opinion in Belgium demands accountability on Gaza situation
Domestic opinion in Belgium has become a decisive factor in shaping the country’s stance. Recent polls by CNCD-11.11.11, a coalition of NGOs, showed that more than 54 percent of Belgians support punitive measures against Israel in order to defend international law and stand up for Palestinian rights.
This strong public backing has encouraged the government to take bolder steps, including the decision to recognize Palestine as a state. However, Belgium has tied this recognition to an important condition: Hamas must disarm and release all hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attacks.
EU division on Gaza weakens its global credibility and leadership role
Belgium is not alone in raising concerns. Other European leaders have also warned that the Gaza conflict has exposed deep fractures in EU foreign policy. Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas stated that the divisions are undermining Europe’s credibility, particularly at a time when the EU is expected to demonstrate global leadership on security, trade, and humanitarian issues.

Without unity, the EU risks being perceived as ineffective or selective in applying international law supporting Ukraine quickly but hesitating on Gaza.
France joins Belgium in urging stronger European position on Gaza
French Commission Vice President Teresa Ribera has echoed Belgium’s concerns, saying the EU must take “meaningful” action before it is too late. She stressed that the humanitarian situation in Gaza requires urgent steps, including sanctions and stronger diplomatic pressure on Israel. According to Ribera, Europe’s silence or indecision not only harms Palestinians but also damages the EU’s credibility as a defender of democracy and human rights.
Belgium’s firm position is significant because it highlights the growing gap between public opinion and EU policy. By committing to recognize Palestine under clear conditions and by calling for sanctions, Belgium is signaling that Europe cannot remain divided if it wants to play a serious role on the world stage.
