A fiery exchange erupted in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi clashed over the controversial “vote cho” (vote theft) remark. The confrontation triggered loud protests, repeated interruptions, and a temporary adjournment of the House.
Rahul Gandhi Repeats ‘Vote Chori’ Claim, BJP MPs Erupt in Protest
During a debate on electoral reforms, Rahul Gandhi accused the ruling BJP of “misusing institutions” and raised concerns about alleged irregularities in past elections. Referring to complaints from opposition parties, he claimed that “the nation wants answers on vote chori.”
The remark immediately drew sharp objections from Treasury Bench members, who demanded its withdrawal.
Responding strongly, Amit Shah said Rahul Gandhi was “insulting India’s democratic institutions” and accused him of spreading false narratives.
Shah said the Election Commission was an “independent constitutional authority” and suggested that the Opposition was creating excuses after electoral defeats. He also criticised Gandhi’s frequent use of the word “sir,” implying it was meant to mock the Speaker’s authority.
Speaker Intervenes Amid Chaos
As MPs from both sides shouted slogans, the Speaker urged members to maintain order. Despite repeated warnings, disruptions continued, forcing a brief adjournment.
When the House resumed, the Speaker expunged certain portions of the debate that were deemed “unparliamentary.”
