Nepal Police have recovered 24 bodies from a single house in Betravati, Vidur Municipality-10, Nuwakot, while searching for people missing after the devastating Bhotekoshi River floods.
Police had been using a drone camera to search flood-hit areas when they spotted a body near a house. Based on the drone footage, a search and rescue team was sent to the location on Tuesday.
The body was found at the house of Bachhuram Awasthi in Betravati. The area around the house was covered with thick, muddy debris brought by the flood, making it extremely difficult for rescuers to reach the location.
Police Inspector Mahendra Darnal and Inspector Yubaraj Katuwal, along with their teams, collected materials including corrugated sheets, wooden pieces and ropes from nearby debris. They used the materials to cross the muddy area and eventually reached the house.
After entering the house, police suspected that more bodies could be trapped inside. A further search led to the discovery of 23 additional bodies, bringing the total number of bodies found at the location to 24.
According to police, the bodies include 12 women, 11 men and one girl.
Police have completed the necessary documentation of the bodies and are now working to transport and manage them. However, the thick mud and difficult terrain have made the process extremely challenging.
Police said a helicopter may be needed to remove the bodies from the area because vehicles and rescuers cannot easily reach the location through the mud and debris.
Nepal Police are continuing search and rescue operations in the flood-affected area in coordination with local authorities and other security agencies.
The discovery has added to the growing human toll of the devastating floods, with rescue teams continuing to search areas where people may still be trapped or missing.
