Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced on January 17, 2026, a major initiative to provide structured political education and mentorship for first-term members of the Diet. The program aims to equip newly elected lawmakers particularly the large cohort of freshmen from the 2025 general election with essential knowledge of parliamentary procedure, legislative drafting, constitutional principles, and effective constituency management.
Takaichi emphasized that “a strong democracy depends on capable legislators from day one.” The initiative includes mandatory orientation sessions, ongoing seminars led by veteran MPs and constitutional scholars, and personalized mentorship pairings with experienced politicians across party lines.
The Prime Minister, herself a long-serving Diet member known for her conservative and security-focused stance, framed the move as part of broader efforts to strengthen the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and improve legislative quality. She also hinted at extending similar training to opposition freshmen to foster bipartisan cooperation on key national issues.
