American Workers Minimum Wage Hikes Hit Millions from January 1, 2026

American Workers Minimum Wage Hikes Hit Millions from January 1, 2026

Millions of American workers start 2026 with higher paychecks as minimum wage increases take effect in 19 states on January 1. These adjustments boost wages for over 8.3 million employees, adding about $5 billion in earnings collectively. Additionally, dozens of cities and counties implement their own raises, expanding the impact.

The federal minimum wage stays at $7.25 per hour unchanged since 2009. However, states and localities step in to address rising living costs, with many tying increases to inflation or following scheduled paths to $15+.

For the first time, more workers live in states with a minimum wage of at least $15/hour than in those stuck at the federal $7.25. Six states cross the $15 threshold in 2026.

Nearly 50 cities/counties also hike wages on January 1, often higher than state levels Later in 2026, states like Alaska, Florida (to $15 in September), and Oregon follow suit.
