BJP Landmark Victory in Kerala Local Polls: Historic Control of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation

The Bharatiya Janata Party creates waves in kerala politics during the 2025 local body elections. Specifically, the BJP-led NDA captures the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation, ending the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) decades-long dominance in the state capital. Moreover, this breakthrough highlights growing urban support for the party ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.

BJP Election Results Breakdown

Counting concludes after polls in December 2025. The NDA secures 50 wards in the 101-member corporation, achieving a clear majority with independent support. In contrast, the LDF wins only 29 seats, while the UDF takes 19. Additionally, independents claim a few wards, solidifying BJP’s position.

This result overturns the LDF’s 45-year hold on the civic body. Furthermore, the NDA also gains in other areas like Tripunithura Municipality.

VV Rajesh Sworn In as Mayor

Senior BJP leader VV Rajesh takes oath as Thiruvananthapuram Mayor on December 26, 2025. He becomes the first BJP mayor in Kerala’s history. Consequently, celebrations erupt among party workers, marking a symbolic shift in the capital’s governance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi calls it a “watershed moment,” praising grassroots efforts. State BJP leaders emphasize development agendas like “Vikasita Keralam.” Meanwhile, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor acknowledges the “historic” win, even in his constituency.
