The Bharatiya Janata Party achieves a groundbreaking milestone in Kerala politics on December 26, 2025. VV Rajesh, a senior BJP leader, takes oath as the Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. Moreover, this victory ends nearly 45 years of continuous Left Democratic Front dominance in the state capital’s civic body.
Historic Election Results Fuel BJP’s Rise
The BJP-led NDA secures 50 seats in the 100-ward corporation during the local body polls held earlier in December. Additionally, support from one independent councillor helps Rajesh win the mayoral election with 51 votes. In contrast, the LDF candidate receives 29 votes, while the UDF gets 17.
This surge marks the BJP’s first-ever control of a major municipal corporation in Kerala. Furthermore, Rajesh, who won his Kodunganoor ward by 515 votes, emerges as the party’s state secretary and a seasoned lawyer with over 25 years in politics.
Celebrations and Political Reactions
BJP workers erupt in joy with slogans and fireworks outside the corporation office. Prime Minister Narendra Modi calls it a “watershed moment” in Kerala politics. Additionally, state BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar pledges to transform Thiruvananthapuram into one of India’s top cities, focusing on development, drainage, and waste management.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan graciously congratulates Rajesh over the phone. However, the win highlights anti-incumbency against the LDF and positions BJP strongly ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
