Ukraine Says Europe Cannot Replace US in Security Guarantees, Zelenskyy Warns

Ukraine Says Europe Cannot Replace US in Security Guarantees, Zelenskyy Warns

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Europe should not attempt to replace the United States in providing security guarantees to Ukraine. His remarks come amid ongoing discussions about Europe’s long-term role in regional defense as the war with Russia continues.

Zelenskyy Emphasizes US Role in Security

Speaking on the issue, Zelenskyy stressed that the United States remains central to Ukraine’s security framework. While he welcomed Europe’s growing defense efforts, he made it clear that European nations alone cannot offer the same level of military, financial, and strategic support as Washington.

Moreover, Zelenskyy noted that US involvement sends a strong deterrent message and helps maintain balance within NATO-led security arrangements.

Europe’s Support Still Crucial

At the same time, the Ukrainian president acknowledged Europe’s significant contribution. European countries have provided military aid, humanitarian assistance, and political backing since the conflict began.

However, Zelenskyy argued that Europe’s role should complement, not replace, US security guarantees. According to him, unity between the US and Europe remains essential for Ukraine’s long-term stability.

Concerns Over Shifting Global Priorities

Zelenskyy’s comments reflect growing concern in Kyiv about shifting geopolitical priorities. As debates continue over defense spending and strategic autonomy in Europe, Ukraine fears that reduced US involvement could weaken deterrence against Russia.

Therefore, Ukrainian leadership continues to call for sustained transatlantic cooperation to ensure reliable security commitments.
