Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has demanded the arrest of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, holding her government responsible for alleged mismanagement and chaos during a recent event in Kolkata linked to football star Lionel Messi.
What Happened at the Event
The event, organised to celebrate football and global sporting icons, reportedly witnessed crowd mismanagement, confusion, and disruptions. Visuals circulating online showed overcrowding and disorder, prompting criticism from opposition leaders.
Authorities later said the situation was brought under control, and no serious injuries were reported.
Sarma Targets West Bengal Government
Reacting sharply, Himanta Biswa Sarma accused the Trinamool Congress-led government of administrative failure. He alleged that poor planning and lack of crowd control led to chaos, demanding accountability at the highest level.
Sarma claimed the incident embarrassed the state and put public safety at risk.
Leaders from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) dismissed Sarma’s remarks as politically motivated. They said necessary arrangements were made and accused the BJP leader of exploiting the incident for political mileage.
State officials maintained that inquiries are underway to assess lapses, if any.
Political Reactions Intensify
The incident has added fuel to the ongoing political sparring between the BJP and the TMC. Opposition parties have called for an impartial investigation, while the ruling party urged restraint and avoidance of provocative statements.
Experts say the episode highlights the need for stricter crowd management protocols at large public events, especially those involving international celebrities and mass gatherings.
