Parliament to mark 150 years of Vande Mataram PM to open historic debate in Lok Sabha

Parliament to mark 150 years of Vande Mataram PM to open historic debate in Lok Sabha

The lower house of Parliament will hold a special debate on 8 December 2025 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram

The debate aims to revisit the rich history, cultural importance and lesser-known facts surrounding Vande Mataram a hymn that has long resonated as a symbol of national unity and identity in India.

After the PM’s address, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other senior leaders will also speak, joined by representatives from opposition parties.

A year-long nationwide commemoration of the song’s sesquicentennial has prompted the special discussion, which seeks to re-assert its civilisational and emotional significance for India’s future, especially after recent controversies over removed or “missing” stanzas of the song’s original version.

As Parliament convenes during the ongoing Winter Session, all eyes will be on whether the debate turns into a broader discussion on national identity, cultural heritage, and political consensus beyond just nostalgia.
