New Delhi Mumbai The opening day of the 2025 Winter Session of Parliament saw major disruptions as Opposition lawmakers launched protests over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The uproar forced the Lok Sabha to adjourn twice, first till noon and then again till 2 PM, as MPs demanded a full debate on what they described as a “vote-chopping” exercise.
During a brief 12-minute window when the House reconvened, the government managed to introduce three bills — including a tobacco excise law, a cess on pan-masala manufacture, and a GST bill for Manipur. However, continued sloganeering and walkouts forced further adjournment. Many Opposition members painted SIR not as a routine electoral update, but as a threat to voter rights a concern amplified by recent tragic incidents reported among election-roll officials.

With the Parliament session now off to a rocky start and local elections underway under tense political conditions, the coming days could shape both national and regional power dynamics.
