Parliament adjourns till 2 PM amid opposition uproar over SIR and other contentious issues

New Delhi The first day of the 2025 Winter Session turned chaotic as lawmakers in the Lok Sabha walked into a storm of protests over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the government’s plan to introduce a bill on pan-masala health warnings. The disruption forced the Speaker to adjourn the House until 2 PM.

Opposition members demanded an immediate debate on SIR, alleging the exercise could disenfranchise voters and compromise electoral fairness. Their sloganeering and refusal to allow regular proceedings triggered the suspension. Meanwhile, ruling-party leaders defended the agenda, saying the bills are important for public health and governance.

With tensions high and parliamentary business stalled, all eyes are on whether the House will resume with order or the standoff deepens potentially affecting how quickly the government can push through its legislative agenda this session.
