Strict visa rules discourage many Vietnamese from travelling abroad, says survey by Agoda

A recent survey conducted by Agoda reveals that strict visa requirements are dampening international travel among Vietnamese citizens. Among the 3,353 respondents polled across nine Asian markets, about 60% of Vietnamese said visa restrictions significantly affect their travel plans and many are now leaning toward domestic trips instead of international ones.

According to the report, half of those surveyed said they would prefer to travel within Vietnam rather than deal with the hassle of applying for visas abroad — a notable jump from 26% last year.

Part of the difficulty stems from the fact that Vietnam’s passport currently ranks 92nd in the 2025 Henley Passport Index, giving holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to just 50 out of 227 global destinations.

The findings suggest that until immigration policies and visa procedures ease, many Vietnamese travellers may continue to favour domestic tourism with potential long-term impacts on how often they travel overseas and which countries they can realistically visit.
