Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane and his elder brother MLA Nilesh Rane are embroiled in a high-stakes war for local power in the southern Sindhudurg district. The bone of contention is the Kankavali Municipal Council (KMC), and the battle lines cut across brotherhood, legacy, and political alliances.
A Clash Born from Political Legacy
The rivalry takes on mythic undertones like a Mahabharata-style duel, political pundits say as the sons of veteran BJP MP Narayan Rane vie for control in their home turf. Nitesh, who serves as both a state minister and the guardian minister for Sindhudurg, is leading a concerted campaign to keep influence firmly within his camp.

Nilesh Rane, on the other hand, holds an MLA seat in neighboring Kudal and currently represents the Shiv Sena (the Eknath Shinde faction). His challenge is not just familial but institutional he’s running against Nitesh’s heavy political machinery with backing from a broad “rainbow” coalition.
A Rainbow Coalition Against Rane Senior’s Younger Son
Nitesh has fielded Sameer Nalawade, a seasoned local politician, for the post of council chief. But he faces a tough contender in Sandesh Parkar, a veteran who commands respect as a five-time sarpanch and former municipal president. Parkar runs under the banner of “Shahar Vikas Aghadi” “City Development Front”, a surprising alliance that includes both factions of the Shiv Sena and other opposition players.
Party observers note that this coalition is more than political convenience. As one Shiv Sena leader put it, “local dynamics here favour a cross-party alliance people want development, not just party flags.”
Fractured Loyalties and Family Fallout
At the heart of the conflict lies personal tension: sources say Narayan Rane tried — but failed to mediate a truce between his two sons ahead of these elections.
Nilesh has also publicly rebuked Nitesh’s rhetoric. In a pointed reference to the Mahabharata, he warned that when family members face each other “on the battlefield,” the real test is not just strength, but conviction.
