Seoul Watches Kim Jong Un’s Beijing Visit with Caution

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s visit to Beijing has sparked close attention in Seoul. He arrived in China to attend a large-scale military parade marking the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II. The event is symbolic not only for China but also for countries seeking to highlight their strength and shared opposition to Western influence. South Korea’s leadership immediately noted the trip and stressed that it will watch every step with caution.

Kim’s presence in Beijing is seen as a clear attempt to tighten relations with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. For Pyongyang, this is a chance to show that it is not isolated, but instead part of a growing partnership with two powerful allies. Analysts believe the gathering highlights the formation of a strategic triangle China, North Korea, and Russia presenting a united front against U.S.-led policies in the region.

South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho expressed concern that closer cooperation between Beijing, Pyongyang, and Moscow could shift the regional balance of power. If this partnership deepens, it could weaken international efforts to pressure North Korea on its nuclear program.

Seoul has made it clear that while Kim may seek temporary strength through these alliances, long-term survival requires dialogue with both the United States and South Korea.

South Korea watches for signs of renewed diplomacy with the U.S.

Even with concerns about a new power bloc, Seoul remains watchful for opportunities. Kim Jong Un’s participation in the Beijing ceremony may create space for renewed discussions with the U.S. and South Korea. National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac noted that this could mark the beginning of a shift in North Korea’s diplomatic direction. However, he also cautioned that South Korea must prepare for both possibilities: a return to talks or a rise in tension.

Officials in Seoul stressed that while they welcome any chance for peace, they are not rushing into expectations of quick change.

Diplomatic channels with North Korea remain frozen, and despite Kim’s international appearance, there has been no signal of direct engagement with Seoul. South Korea’s stance is to remain prepared, flexible, and pragmatic supporting dialogue if possible, while strengthening defense in case tensions rise.

Geopolitical importance of Kim’s Beijing appearance

Kim’s trip carries symbolism beyond military parades. It places him on an international stage alongside global leaders, breaking years of diplomatic isolation. Seoul, this is a reminder that North Korea is trying to reshape its image while avoiding pressure over its weapons program.

South Korea will continue to weigh the risks and opportunities, balancing caution with readiness to act if meaningful negotiations emerge.
