China is hosting the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1, 2025. The meeting brings together leaders from more than 20 countries, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. The goal of this large gathering is to improve cooperation among Asian nations, build peace in the region, and provide an alternative to one-sided global power politics.
China’s call for cooperation over domination
Before the summit, China’s Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Bin explained why the meeting is so important. He said the world faces many challenges today, and countries must work together rather than compete for dominance. He warned against hegemonism and power politics, where a few countries put their own interests above everyone else. According to Liu, this behavior creates instability and conflicts.
China wants the SCO to stand as a symbol of fairness, equality, and collective progress. By hosting this summit, Beijing is sending a clear message: the time has come for countries to choose cooperation over confrontation.
SCO as a counterbalance to Western alliances
The SCO often presents itself as an alternative to Western organizations such as NATO and the G7. While Western powers tend to act in groups that mainly serve their own interests, the SCO promotes a “multipolar world,” where many countries have an equal say.
China has repeatedly spoken against “unilateralism,” meaning policies decided by a single powerful nation without consulting others. By holding this summit, China is showing that there are other ways to run international relations through respect, dialogue, and shared growth.
India and Pakistan’s role in the summit
India and Pakistan, both full members of the SCO, bring their own unique perspectives. Indian leaders have also stressed the importance of fighting terrorism consistently, without double standards.
Pakistan, on the other hand, views the SCO as a chance to deepen its economic and security ties with both China and other regional partners. With China leading the summit, Pakistan expects stronger support for its development projects and regional stability efforts.
The Tianjin SCO Summit is not just another diplomatic event. It reflects the deep changes happening in international politics. As more countries look for platforms where they can cooperate fairly, the SCO could play a much bigger role in shaping the future.
